Coronaviruses are a group of viruses that cause diseases in mammals and birds. In humans, coronaviruses mainly cause respiratory tract infections. It could be mild illness (like the common cold) or lethal illness, depending on the virus. The previously discovered coronaviruses are rhinoviruses, SARS, MERS, and the recent one is COVID-19. COVID-19 is an infectious disease that first originated from Wuhan, China in December 2019. Within a few weeks, it spread globally at an exponential rate and WHO declared it as a global pandemic on March 2020. It can spread from person to person via coughing, sneezing, or exposure to droplets of saliva from an infected person. It is mandatory to follow respiratory etiquette (covering your mouth while coughing, prefer to do quarantine if you feel sick). Having fever, cough, and breathlessness are the common symptoms for COVID-19. People infected by COVID-19 majorly experience mild to moderate respiratory illness. Senior citizens with low immunity and those with underlying medical problems like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and cancer are more likely to develop serious illness. The significant deaths happened due to multiple organ failure and difficulty in breathing. Till now, there is no specific vaccine or treatment for COVID-19.
Nevertheless, many microbiologists and medical experts are working for the cure. The best way to avert coronavirus is to avoid exposure to the virus. Also, follow the guidelines given by relevant authorities or experts and avoid rumours during these crucial times.
