Body temperature, hormone production, platelet and cardiac function follow a circadian (24 hours) rhythm. So some tests are samples at specific time of the day (e.g. testosterone should be samples between 7 am and 10 am as levels are at the peak, evening levels maybe upto 50% lower. Similarly, serum cortisol should be samples in the early morning when levels are 50 to 100% higher than levels in the late afternoon.
Seasonal variation occur with levels of Vit D (25 hydroxyvitamin D) with lowest levels being observed in the winter. Females in their reproductive age group, have predictable monthly rhythm of FSH, LH, Oestrogen and Progenstrone. The interpretation of the results would be meaningful when not only the test results but also stage of the cycle is taken into consideration.
