Microalbuminuria, Spot Urine

Routine

Kidneys perform several tasks related to the survival of the body. One of the tasks performed by the kidneys is filtering albumin. Albumin is a human serum found in the blood plasma. Produced by the liver, albumin is water-soluble and required for cell growth. It is a type of protein that helps tissues to heal and repair. In a healthy person, albumin is present in the blood and not in the urine. When the kidneys become damaged, they leak small amounts of albumin in the urine. The glomerulus in the kidney becomes highly permeable to albumin and leaks it into the urine. Many kidney diseases decrease the permeability of the glomerulus and tend to increase the albumin level in the urine.

Frequently asked questions

As discussed above, the MAU test measures the amount of albumin in your urine. Albumin is a serum produced by the liver and required for several bodily functions. Sometimes, the kidneys filter out the albumin via urine, which is an anomaly. The MAU test is needed to measure the extent of the microalbuminuria condition.

If your kidney is damaged, you need an MAU test to detect the albumin level in the urine. When kidneys are damaged, they start leaking albumin in the urine and cause further problems. People suffering from kidney-related diseases like diabetes also require an MAU test. You need the MAU test to monitor the albumin levels in the body and measure the effectiveness of the kidneys.

Several bodily symptoms indicate that you need an MAU test. After showing any signs of kidney failure, one needs an MAU test. Doctors might also administer an MAU test for someone with hereditary kidney issues. Some common symptoms that require an MAU test are as follows:

  • Swelling in hands and feet
  • Swelling in the abdomen region
  • Swelling in the face
  • Diabetic symptom
  • Edema
  • Foamy urine
  • Hypertension symptoms
  • High blood pressure

The MAU test results indicate the quantity of albumin leaked in your urine. The result of an MUA test is expressed in milligrams (mg). You will know how many milligrams of albumin are leaked into your urine in 24 hours.

The albumin in the urine is less than 30 mg/day for a healthy person. People having albumin between 30 mg and 300 mg per day in the urine suffer from microalbuminuria. People having more than 300 mg per day of albumin in the urine suffer from macroalbuminuria.

The frequency of the microalbuminuria (MAU) test depends on the severity of the disease/damage. People having life-threatening kidney failure might require an MAU test every month. People having hereditary kidney problems might require an MUA test every quarter.

Many diagnostic centres collect urine samples for an MAU test at home. However, the patient will have to pay more than normal for an MAU test at home. If the patient is in critical condition, the spot urine test can be organised at home.
