Frequently asked questions
A progesterone test can help determine whether low progesterone levels are causing
complications during pregnancy or female infertility (problems becoming pregnant
after a year of trying). The test may also aid in the diagnosis of some adrenal gland
issues that might result in elevated progesterone levels in both males and females.
Progesterone is often evaluated six to eight days after ovulation because
progesterone levels increase after ovulation and peak five to nine days following your
luteal phase, which takes place during the second half of the menstrual cycle after
ovulation (about day 21 of a day 28 cycle).
You may have heard that a progesterone level of at least 10 ng/ml (30 nmol/L) is
necessary for an embryo to successfully implant and for a pregnancy to develop.
A progesterone lab can be used to monitor ovulation and identify ectopic or failed
pregnancies. Results of this blood test are available in one to two days without the
need to fast.
