Peripheral Blood Smear Examination

Frequently asked questions

Peripheral Blood Smear involves study of peripheral blood cells โ€“ platelets, white and red blood cells smeared on a slide under a microscope. PBS is important and very informative tool for Physician and Hematologist in screening, diagnosis and monitoring treatment response in many diseases. Your healthcare professional may order this test as part of the routine health check-up to diagnose many illnesses and medical complications. It also has other uses, including evaluation of type and etiology of anaemia, distinguishing blood stream infections - bacterial infections from viral infections, diagnosing malaria, and looking for causes of jaundice.

Peripheral blood smear examination results usually describe the number and appearance of your white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets. Your results will be helpful in detecting anything unusual about your blood. Abnormal white blood cells may indicate leukaemia, allergies, inflammation, or bone marrow disorders. Abnormal red blood cells may indicate haemolytic anaemia, sickle cell anaemia, liver disease, certain types of cancer, thalassemia, or anaemia. Abnormal platelet results may indicate inherited platelet disorders like Bernard-Soulier syndrome.

A blood smear is a blood sample that is treated with a special stain to detect various blood disorders and infections. It is also known as peripheral blood film, blood cell morphology, smear, and blood film. Blood smear is used to check the number, shape, and size of three types of blood cells, including platelets, red blood cells and white blood cells..

Wedge slide is one of the most common peripheral blood slides. An ideal slide should not be too thick or thin. It should end about three-fourths to two-thirds of the way down the slide. It is also important to note down that the end of the smear should be thin and have a rainbow-like crystal-clear reflectiveness. The slide should also not have streaks at the edge. By meeting these parameters, Pathologists can detect various blood-related problems and approximately quantify the blood cells.

There are a few ways to check the quality of blood smears. You should ensure that the smear was done within a few hours of the blood collection procedure. This results in the proper staining, which will be required for proper interpretation. When looking at the slide and checking the smear, ensure it has two edges- the feathered edge and the thick edge. Approximately three-fourths to two-thirds of the blood smears' slide length should be covered by the smear. It should also not have any irregularities, holes, or streaks.
