Amebiasis, also known as amoebic dysentery, is a parasitic infection of the intestines. It is caused by a microscopic parasite called Entamoeba histolytica. The term “amoebiasis” simply means an infection caused by an amoeba—tiny single-celled organisms that can invade the intestines and sometimes spread to other parts of the body.
This condition is more common in areas with poor sanitation, contaminated water, or unsafe food handling. Although many people may not show symptoms, severe cases can lead to painful diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and even liver complications if untreated.
The infection spreads when a person consumes food or water contaminated with the parasite. To put it simply, amoebiasis is caused by swallowing Entamoeba histolytica cysts that survive outside the body in soil, water, or food.
Some common causes include:
Not everyone infected will show symptoms, but when they do, they can range from mild stomach issues to severe dysentery.
Common symptoms:
In rare cases, the parasite can spread beyond the intestines, causing liver abscesses and complications in the lungs or brain.
Doctors may recommend:
If you’re experiencing persistent diarrhea or abdominal pain, getting tested early can prevent complications.
Treatment depends on the severity of the infection.
1. Amoebiasis Medication
Doctors usually prescribe:
These medications help ensure the infection doesn’t come back.
2. Hydration and Diet
Since diarrhea leads to dehydration, drinking oral rehydration solutions (ORS), coconut water, or clear soups is crucial. A light diet of rice, bananas, and curd can help soothe the stomach.
3. Hospitalization in Severe Cases
If the infection spreads beyond the intestines or causes severe dehydration, hospitalization may be required.
Prevention is better than cure, especially in places where sanitation may be poor. You can protect yourself by:
Amoebiasis can range from a mild stomach infection to a serious health condition if ignored. The good news is that with early diagnosis and proper amoebiasis treatment, recovery is quick and effective. Practicing hygiene, drinking safe water, and being mindful of what you eat are simple yet powerful ways to protect yourself.
If you are experiencing prolonged diarrhea or abdominal pain, it’s best to consult a doctor and get a stool test done. At Pathkind Labs, reliable diagnostic services like stool examination and liver function tests can help confirm infection and guide timely treatment.
