Giardiasis is an intestinal infection caused by a tiny parasite called Giardia lamblia (also known as Giardia intestinalis). These microscopic parasites live in the small intestine and can lead to uncomfortable digestive issues.
Put simply, giardiasis means an infection of the intestines caused by Giardia parasites, often spreading through contaminated water, food, or contact with infected people.
Though it’s common worldwide, giardiasis is especially widespread in areas where sanitation and clean drinking water are limited.
Giardiasis is caused by a parasite named Giardia lamblia. These parasites form protective shells called cysts, which allow them to survive outside the body for weeks or even months. Once swallowed, the cysts release the parasites into the intestines and trigger infection.
Not everyone with giardiasis shows symptoms. Some people may carry the parasite and unknowingly spread it to others.
When symptoms do appear, they usually develop 1–3 weeks after infection and may include:
Symptoms can last for 2–6 weeks or longer if untreated. In some cases, giardiasis may become chronic, leading to long-term digestive issues.

Giardiasis is usually treated with prescription medications that kill the parasite. Common drugs include:
In addition to medication:
Giardiasis may sound alarming, but with proper awareness, it’s preventable and treatable. Knowing the giardiasis meaning, its causes, symptoms, and prevention strategies can help protect you and your loved ones.
If you suspect an infection, consult a healthcare provider for testing and treatment. Early diagnosis ensures a faster recovery and prevents spreading the parasite further.
