The normal BP range for most adults is below 120/80 mmHg, regardless of age or gender. Blood pressure may increase with age, but higher readings should not automatically be considered healthy. Understanding your BP normal value helps you identify potential hypertension, monitor heart health and seek medical advice when necessary.
Blood pressure measures the force of blood against artery walls. It has two values:
For example, 120/80 mmHg means a systolic pressure of 120 and diastolic pressure of 80.
According to American Heart Association guidelines, normal adult blood pressure is below 120 systolic and below 80 diastolic.
Although blood pressure patterns change with age, the standard healthy BP category remains the same for most adults.
| Age group | Normal BP for men | Normal BP for women |
| 18–29 years | Below 120/80 | Below 120/80 |
| 30–39 years | Below 120/80 | Below 120/80 |
| 40–49 years | Below 120/80 | Below 120/80 |
| 50–59 years | Below 120/80 | Below 120/80 |
| 60–69 years | Below 120/80 | Below 120/80 |
| 70+ years | Below 120/80 | Below 120/80 |
All readings are in mmHg. These are standard adult classification thresholds, not age-specific population averages or individual treatment targets.
Older adults may need personalised BP targets depending on frailty, dizziness, kidney health and other conditions.
The BP normal range for female adults is below 120/80 mmHg, similar to men.
However, hormonal changes, pregnancy and menopause can influence blood pressure. Women with hypertension during pregnancy require specific medical assessment because pregnancy-related hypertension has different clinical considerations.
The normal BP range for men is also below 120/80 mmHg.
Men may develop hypertension due to factors including excess body weight, smoking, high salt intake, inactivity and family history. Regular monitoring becomes especially important when cardiovascular risk factors are present.
The following chart uses American Heart Association classifications.
| BP category | Systolic | Diastolic |
| Normal | Below 120 | Below 80 |
| Elevated | 120–129 | Below 80 |
| Stage 1 hypertension | 130–139 | 80–89 |
| Stage 2 hypertension | 140 or higher | 90 or higher |
| Severely elevated | Above 180 | Above 120 |
For hypertension categories, either number reaching the threshold is sufficient. WHO generally uses persistent readings of 140/90 mmHg or higher on different days to diagnose hypertension.
Simple lifestyle changes support healthy blood pressure:
For accurate readings, sit quietly for five minutes, support your arm at heart level and avoid caffeine, smoking or exercise for 30 minutes beforehand.
Knowing your normal BP range supports preventive care. Alongside regular BP checks, your doctor may recommend kidney function, blood sugar or lipid profile tests based on your risk factors.
