Ozempic is a prescription injection containing semaglutide, primarily used to manage type 2 diabetes. It can also support weight loss by reducing appetite and increasing fullness. However, Ozempic is not the same as semaglutide products specifically approved for weight management. Its benefits, dosage and risks require medical supervision.
Ozempic belongs to a class of medicines called GLP-1 receptor agonists. It mimics a natural gut hormone that helps regulate blood sugar and appetite.
The Ozempic injection works by:
These effects help improve blood glucose control and may contribute to weight reduction.
Ozempic uses include improving blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes, alongside diet and exercise.
Depending on the country's approved prescribing information, it may also reduce certain cardiovascular and kidney risks in eligible adults with type 2 diabetes.
Ozempic for weight loss is sometimes prescribed off-label. Wegovy, another semaglutide brand, has specific weight-management indications. In India, approval depends on the individual product and formulation.
Semaglutide can reduce hunger and calorie intake, supporting gradual weight loss.
However, results vary depending on dosage, treatment duration, diet, physical activity and individual health conditions.
Clinical trials of higher-dose semaglutide specifically studied for obesity have shown substantial average weight reduction. These findings should not be assumed to apply equally to Ozempic doses.
Weight may return after treatment stops, making long-term lifestyle changes important.
Ozempic is generally injected once weekly under the skin of the abdomen, thigh or upper arm.
The following is a commonly used adult dosing schedule for type 2 diabetes, not a self-treatment plan.
| Treatment stage | Typical weekly dose |
| First 4 weeks | 0.25 mg |
| After 4 weeks | 0.5 mg |
| If further control is needed | 1 mg, then potentially 2 mg |
| Maximum usual weekly dose | 2 mg |
Dose increases require appropriate intervals and medical assessment. The starting dose helps improve tolerability and is not intended for maintenance blood sugar control.
Never increase the dose independently or combine semaglutide products.
Common Ozempic side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation and abdominal discomfort.
These symptoms are often more noticeable when starting treatment or increasing the dose.
More serious risks include:
Low blood sugar is more likely when Ozempic is combined with insulin or sulfonylureas.
Seek urgent medical attention for severe, persistent abdominal pain or signs of a serious allergic reaction.
Ozempic should not be used by people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2, or those with serious hypersensitivity to semaglutide.
It is not recommended during pregnancy. Patients planning pregnancy should discuss stopping semaglutide at least two months beforehand.
Inform your doctor about pancreatitis, severe digestive problems, kidney disease and other medicines before treatment.
