A bruise is a discoloured patch of skin caused by blood leaking from damaged small blood vessels beneath the skin. Also called ecchymosis when referring to a larger, flat area of bleeding under the skin, bruising commonly follows an injury. Most bruises heal naturally, but frequent or unexplained bruises may require medical attention.
The bruise meaning in Hindi is नील पड़ना or चोट का नीला निशान.
A bruise develops when small blood vessels break after a bump, fall or injury. Blood collects beneath the skin without an open wound.
Bruises may initially appear red, blue, purple or dark brown, depending on skin tone. As they heal, their colour may change to green, yellow or brown.
Bruise vs Ecchymosis: Ecchymosis is the medical term commonly used for a larger, flat bruise, often over 1 cm. Not every small bruise is described as ecchymosis.
Common causes of bruises on body include:
Occasional bruises after minor injuries are common. However, repeated bruising without an obvious cause should be assessed.
Typical symptoms include:
Small bruises often improve within one to two weeks, while larger or deeper bruises may take several weeks.
For a minor injury, simple bruise treatment can reduce discomfort and swelling.
1. Apply a cold compress
Wrap an ice pack in a towel and apply for 10–20 minutes at a time during the first 24–48 hours. Never apply ice directly to the skin.
2. Rest the injured area
Avoid activities that increase pain or put pressure on the bruise.
3. Elevate the affected body part
If possible, raise the injured arm or leg above heart level to reduce swelling.
4. Use gentle warmth later
After 48 hours, a warm compress may help relieve discomfort if swelling has settled.
5. Consider pain relief
Paracetamol may help with pain when used appropriately. Avoid aspirin for bruise-related pain unless prescribed, as it may worsen bleeding.
Avoid vigorous massage and unproven remedies that could irritate the skin.
Ecchymosis treatment depends on the underlying cause.
Most uncomplicated bruises require no specific medical treatment. However, a doctor may recommend:
Do not stop prescribed blood-thinning medicines without medical advice.
Seek medical advice if you experience:
Seek urgent care after a significant head injury, or for severe swelling, intense pain or uncontrolled bleeding.
Most bruises heal naturally with basic care. However, recurring or unexplained bruising deserves medical evaluation.
