The Quantiferon-TB IGRA Test is used to check for TB infection. Tuberculosis is an infectious disease that affects the lungs and other body parts. It can be further categorized as being either latent or active. Active TB causes symptoms and is contagious. Latent TB isn’t contagious and doesn’t cause symptoms. The Quantiferon-TB IGRA Test detects immune responses to tuberculosis infection. The CDC recommends it as an alternative to the tuberculin skin test in certain situations. This blood test can also be used to assist with diagnosis when a person is showing symptoms of TB disease. The Quantiferon-TB IGRA Test measures the amount of interferon-gamma (IFN-g), which is a specific protein produced by a person’s T cells. You may be ordered to get this test if your working conditions or living situation puts you at risk for exposure to TB.

Frequently asked questions

An IGRA is more accurate than the TST as it doesn’t require the patients to return for test result determination. Also, IGRAs don’t cross-react with non-TB mycobacteria, including BCG strains making them more specific for TB infection. This test can also be used to identify the patients who’re most likely to benefit from TB infection treatment.

Quantiferon-TB IGRA Test results are typically available in 24-48 hours. The duration may also vary depending on the laboratory from where you’re getting the test done.

A positive Quantiferon-TB IGRA Test result means you have been infected with tuberculosis bacteria. You may need to undergo additional tests to determine if you have TB disease or latent TB infection.

Quantiferon-TB IGRA Test results are reliable. But in some cases, it may produce false negative test results in which a person has a TB infection, but the results are negative. This can occur in individuals with a weakened immune system, including HIV. The test timing can also interfere with the accuracy of results. If you get tested soon after getting exposed to tuberculosis bacteria, the test may indicate a false negative result.
