Torch IgM Antibodies are a group of tests used to detect an infection caused by Toxoplasma gondii, a parasite that transfers to the foetus from the pregnant woman through the placenta. The infection caused by the Toxoplasma gondiiparasite is known as Toxoplasmosis. If untreated, it can cause seizures, blindness, deafness, and intellectual disability. Early detection of the infection can prevent complications in new-borns. Specifically, the tests screen for immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies. IgM antibodies are found when you have an acute infection. Your healthcare provider uses this antibody along with the health history of the pregnant woman to access if the foetus has an infection. IgMโ€ฏis the largestโ€ฏantibody that appears in response to exposure to an antigen. These antibodies provide short-term protection against any kind of infection.

Frequently asked questions

The Torch IgG antibodies test is a diagnostic test used on expectant mothers and women who are trying to get pregnant. If either the mother or the child exhibits symptoms, this test is performed to check for antibodies to the infectious illnesses on the panel in pregnant women and infants. These microorganisms have the potential to damage the growing foetus during pregnancy and perhaps result in miscarriages. It might hinder the foetus' natural development and increase the risk of congenital problems.

To ensure the harmful germs donโ€™tโ€™ cause miscarriage, it is crucial to do the TORCH Test. The physicians can treat the patient to stop more miscarriages if the test yields good results.

The first 3โ€“4 months of pregnancy are a vulnerable time for the developing foetus. Thus, doctors advise this battery of tests to make sure that any illness in a pregnant woman does not spread to the developing baby and result in anomalies.

The turnaround time for the test is 1 - 3 days.
